Episode 19: What’s on JOE Mind?

Posted in WOJM Regular Edition by whatsonjoemind on September 1st, 2011

Think you've seen and heard everything there is about Joe?  Think again!  This week we are joined by Jay Gish, director of Yo Joe - A Real American Hip-Hop Musical.  You have NEVER heard Joe like this before - ever!  We even have a clip to share as we talk about the production with Jay and Dave Stecco who plays Gung Ho's alter ego, "Full Bore."  After, we empty the mail bag - or at least put a nice dent in it.  Believe it or not, we even talk about My Little Pony.  Find out which Joes we like that got little or no love from the comic and cartoon, get our opinions of the line for the next 5 year and hear our guesses concerning who we would like to see in the GIJCC's subscription program.  Speaking of the GIJCC, the staff lends a helping hand by encouraging an over anxious fandom to show a little patience.  As they say, good things come, to those who wait.  All of this, plus hurricanes, Craig from The Fwooshcast and Greg starts off our Toys for Tots campaign on a good foot.  Oh, and we have a special episode #21 planned - it Chuck's SILENT EPISODE!  No...but seriously, its cool, but you will have to listen to find out what it is!

    Hi Guys !

Again wonderful show. The Joe musical sounds like a real laugh riot. I saw the PSA’s and laughed till it hurt.

I know it was announced after the cast was done but you guys must be very happy that Footloose is coming out. Think that the fact that the remake of the movie Footloose might have sparked an incentive to bring out a long lost joe that fans had been vocal for?

You guys are right about giving the club some space. I think what the main issue is as well is that everyone one wants some sort of clarification and to put the rumors to bed. Ad its hard to do that. Sue it gets everyone talking but as we have seen on the facebook page it does become a problem for the club. I also think that maybe the fact they released the first two was kind of a back lash that ended up feeding the fan machine. In support of the club I will now refrane from asking any questions anymore. I’m just going to buy it. Perhaps twice over. I know I’m nuts.

Anyway, I can’t wait for next week and just to clarify something the Sunbow series( at least till the movie), Resolute, and Renegades were the cartoon brands that worked. DIC dropped the ball with the exception of the 5 part ‘Operation Dragon Fire’ plot line. It had great characters( Ambush, Metal-head, Pathfinder) but the plots they wrote for cobra world conquest felt like they just didn’t have the fangs for it.

Anyway till next week. Great Show as always.

Ryan - Yeah, I was a little mad because we had all decided we were going to make predictions about the incentive figure for 2012 (since we all thought it was going to be announced the next day).

Of course we forgot, and my bold prediction was going to be “Footloose”.

But I don’t sound so smart about that now.

    Hey Guys,

There was actually something you guys could clarify for me. I was wondering what is Duke’s official rank. As a Sgt or First Sergent. Why does this character have such a high position. I know he falls under Hawk in the command structure but how does the rank of Sergent get 2nd overall status over say a captain or a lieutenant?

And I just also wanted to add in my last post I omitted shows like Sigma six and Valor vs Venom for a couple of reasons. One I hadn’t seen Valor vs Venom as of yet and Sigma six I have only managed to catch a couple of episodes to which have been decent but as I found with most anime it develops to many plot lines and unfortunately gives me a headache after a little while so I have avoided watching the entire series. Though the couple of episodes I have seen were very interesting. So sorry to the Sigma six guys if offended. but I still think DIC dropped the ball on plot lines.

Anyway good luck with softball there Greg and catch you guys next show posting.

The Sigma Six TV show was awful. The toys were cool though.

Ryan - JD is right. I’m about the biggest Sigma 6 fan there is, and the cartoon was downright bad. Almost painful to watch. There was the occasional highlight, but they were few and far between.

Also, as far as Duke goes - the cartoon played it fast and loose with the rank structure, and the comic did some times as well. The way Larry Hama has always explained it, in small special mission squads, a lot of times field leadership is based more on experience than actual rank. Where Duke has a ton of field experience, leadership on any given operation falls to him rather than a potential higher ranking officer. But really, the cartoon just kind of ran with it because Duke was the main character.

In the comics, Larry stayed closer to the rank structure, but passed along that explanation for times when it went out of whack. Probably kind of like in Trucial Abysma where Falcon was on the team (as an LT) but Duke was the obvious squad leader.

Duke is a first sergeant, or “top sergeant”. That is his official rank.

@Justin.- Thanks for giving me some more insight. I had always thought they gave Duke a higher leadership role because ( or at least the way I saw it) that Duke seemed to be a revised version of Hawk from the first cartoon promo for the comics. The ranking system seemed to then get somewhat clearer after the start of the second season of the Sunbow series when Hawk came in as the rank he should be at and Duke at #2. But its nice to get my story straight on the history. Thanks again so much.

Also in the comics Hawk put Duke in charge full time after a bit so whatever the General says goes.

@chuckdawg- Thanks Chuck. Unfortunately my Joe comic collection was and still is very small so again I didn’t know how Duke filled in this huge role when only a sergeant. I’ll have to see about getting the reissued marvel run.

The elusive GI Joe Killaz are the OG’s when it comes to Cobra themed laser gun rap! You guys should track them down in Canada and have them on the show. I’d love to hear their back story.Great show!

I’m seriously considering the four hour drive from Des Moines to Chicago to check out the show. It definitely sounds worth it. Also, the Storm Eagle was kind of crap despite looking good in the cartoon. The X-16 was awesome!

@Jogunwarrior - I highly recommend you make the trip. It’s a very, very funny show and the actors give it their all. I’ll talk about it more on tomorrow’s podcast but it really is a great show.

Gonna need a soundtrack released with that musical! And make sure to keep Craig coming back. I loved his speech at the end of eps15.
