Episode 22: What’s on JOE Mind?

Posted in WOJM Regular Edition by whatsonjoemind on September 23rd, 2011

This week we are joined by HissTank.com honcho Fran (aka Destro) to talk to him about the New Jersey Collectors' Convention and learn a little history on how the HissTank community got its start.  Its an interesting interview - you should listen!  Due to a slow news week, the team discussed many points of view while trying to answer Tim from KC's question about Hasbro distribution. Speaking of distribution, apparently it is working in some areas as Greg, Justin and Gary review each one of the new Renegades figures with the general consensus being that these are AWESOME!  Gary encourages a thread on HissTank concerning wanting a Sideshow Navy SEAL Torpedo figure - how sweet would that figure be!?  Oh, and the Hits for Tots campaign rolls on at full speed.  We'll be making some less fortunate children and the US Marine Corps very happy this holiday season!

Also this week the show announces not one but TWO contests.  Here are the details:

First, from HalloweenCostumes.com, we have a $75 gift certificate for a lucky person who "Likes" our Facebook page.  To enter, hit up our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/whatsonjoemind and click the LIKE button at the top of the page.  It's just that simple!  If you have already "LIKED" our page, do not worry, you are already entered, so you are good to go!! Be sure to tell your other friends who like Joe!  We will pick a winner next week!

Second, from friend of the program Gary Head, we have not one but TWO cases of Joes for a lucky winner who is NOT located in North America.  That's right, no one from the US or Canada is eligible.  This is an international care package consisting of 1 case of Wave 1 and 1 case of Wave 2!  All you have to do is answer these 4 easy questions about the show and email them back to us at whatsonjoemind@gmail.com.  A winner will be pulled in a blind draw from all those who submit correct answers.  Here are the FOUR questions:

1.)  Fictionally speaking, on Chuck's Facebook Fan Page - What the Chuck?, Chuck is "BIG" in what country?

2.)  FILL IN THE BLANK:  Justin just reviewed the most recent convention set.  The name of the set is Mission {BLANK}.

3.)  THIS IS A TWO PART QUESTION.  PART 1: What was the last international country that Greg visitied and in turn was imprisoned and later rescued by Chuck with his Snake Eyes sword?  PART 2:  What was Greg eating and drinking when Chuck found him in jail?

4.)  In what country was Gary in when he watched the 2011 Cricket World Cup?

Good luck to all that enter.  We'll be sure to post everything again on our Facebook page for max exposure.  Next week will be a fun show as we will be joined by Kevin Watts.  Don't let this show slip you by though - go ahead, start listening will ya?

the Geekcast Radio promo is reeeeeally long…. ouch

Otherwise I love this episode of the show. I so badly wish I could make the NJCC because the interview with its creator made me excited for an event I can’t even get to. Really awesome to hear the interview with honcho of uber-Joe site Hisstank. Great stuff, nice to find out the behind the scenes stuff!

I can comment on the promos more in depth later - maybe on next week’s show. They consume such a tiny part of a 90+ minute podcast. Part of being with the GCRN is advertising their shows. They in turn, advertise ours too. That’s kinda how it works.

If anyone wants to hear our promo, let me know and I will post it.

    Sep 23, 2011 at 2:46 pm
  • Justin

The promos are something we’re working with. We’re trying to extend our reach a bit. If by putting some ads out there we can generate enough interest to invest in better equipment and more professional software, I don’t think many folks will complain.

In the grand scheme of things, it was about 2 minutes out of a 90 minute show. I understand it’s a bit disruptive, and it’s something we’re all working with.

We hope everyone will provide feedback. We will certainly take it all in. We do this show for you all who listen, and if the ads are really too much, we’ll look at that. But if they help improve the show in the long run, we hope folks will understand.

  • JD

It just felt like a really long commercial, especially for so early in the episode. Was it really only 2 min long?

Totally umderstand why the ad for GCR is there. It just coulda been a,shorter ad IMO.

I just timed it. The entire segment was 3:15. The Kokomo Toys portion of that was 15 seconds. The contact info, which normally is read every week, ran 1:20ish, so the remain were the ads. So it was right at 2 minutes or so - give or take. The contact info will be a recording going forward. Next episode we will drop in less ads, so I would not worry about it. -Gary

Its ironic this episode had some talk about how hard it is to find Joe stuff on the shelves since I had that problem today tracking down figures. An interesting thing thats happening down here is the vehicles showing up but no sign of figures. Especially at TRU.

    Sep 23, 2011 at 10:47 pm
  • JD

@whatsonjoemind, it’s not like the ads are make or break. I’m never going to stop listening to WOJM, its one of my favorite podcasts. And its simply the BEST Joe cast I can even imagine.

great show again. I didn’t think the ads hurt at all. Might have just been placed in wrong spots or needed to may be just spaced out a bit more.

I would like to know why the Wal-marts in the states are getting joe product while the one I work at here in Winnipeg doesn’t even have any in its shelf plan at all. I know Zellers has space, and i still have to check TRU yet but its really frustrating, which is why I just use ebay( how I found Kokmo toys. great place to deal), smalljoes, Big Bad toys, etc. I still do the hunt every once in a while for kicks.

Buying online just save the major frustration and I get the complete wave so no guessing.

Anyway great show again can`t wait till next one. And Want to give out a shout to Troops of Doom. We made a great trade just recently would be honored to do so again in the future.

Take care guys , can`t wait to tune in next week.

So how ’bout those Patriots? :P

I enjoy your show, but I grow weary of your sophmoric, juvenile “humor”,the constant put-downs of Chuck, who ironically seems to have the most class and decorum. Whoever the idiot who keeps yelling “Boorinnggg” needs to quit. I realize that you’re all products of the American public education system which has dumbed you down on purpose, but you’re all grown men.Just because you collect toys does not mean you have to conduct your show like you’re all in a perpetual state of adolescence. Please do future shows about the horrible working conditions of the Chinese children who make your toys under sweatshop conditions. Thanks…

    Sep 26, 2011 at 8:00 pm
  • whatsonjoemind

As a product of a private education system AND a proud son of a parent who was a public education teacher for 30+ years AND as someone who has visited China and have seen the factories first hand, I find your comment insulting and completely inaccurate. Normally I do not say this, but you have a choice to listen or not to listen. You are welcome not to listen. -Gary

    Jeremy… what Gary said.

    Sep 26, 2011 at 11:32 pm
  • Jogunwarrior

I have to admit, the humor is one of the things that keeps bringing me back, but it may be because I am a product of the public school system! And please feel free to dedicate a show to the awesomeness of ARAH as opposed to Chinese sweatshops!

    Sep 26, 2011 at 11:35 pm
  • JD

I’m pretty sure the guy yelling “borrringg!” is Homer Simpson, it’s a sound clip.

    Sep 27, 2011 at 6:29 am
  • Justin

JD - That’s some cold stuff right there. But I guess those Buffalo fans have to take every little victory they get. See you guys later this year. :D

Jeremy - So you don’t like the sophomoric humor…you don’t like the put-downs of Chuck… you don’t like the drop ins, or the adolescence. Isn’t that our entire show?

Wait a minute… Chuck has the “most class and decorum”?!? Chuck’s mom, is that you?

    Sep 27, 2011 at 7:35 am
  • Kevin

I am a product of both the public AND the private school system (on of the best private schools in the Philly area), and my wife spent 10 years as a private school teacher, and I frequently buy stolen prototype toys from Asia, normally from Chinese children, so those little punks have their own shit going on. I also take issue with the “comedy” on this show, if you can call it that. It is nowhere near lowbrow enough, and I am offended by the lack of expletives. Also, I feel as though Chuck is not belittled enough. If Chuck leaves himself open by saying something stupid, and you guys DON’T call him over it, then you appear weak, unconscious and ignorant. This is a podcast about little plastic men, not coddling each other and stroking each others “feelings”.

I just hope you people take my comments to heart, and there is a LOT more childish humor, rampant expletives, and bashing of Chuck.

  • Eduardo M.

Grow up. What the heck were you expecting? Masterpiece Theater?

BTW, I sub public school and to be completely honest, I would prefer having Gary, Chuck, Justin, Craig, and all the rest of this peanut gallery in my classes than some of the ones I’ve actually had.

I will admit that the “borrringg!” soundclip can get a bit nerve racking at times, but its just a small part of the show and I can live with it.

Seriously, if you don’t like what you hear, GO SOMEPLACE ELSE!! No one is forcing you to sit at your computer and listen to this podcast

^ Ack, Greg got ignored again. MOAR GREG!

    Sep 27, 2011 at 12:36 pm
  • JD

    Poor Greg :(

When are y’all gonna discuss the sublines that killed the original Joe line? We know Justin loves the neon wonders like Star Brigade and DEF and Mega Marines and Ninja Force but I’d love to hear the thoughts of the other panelists. (I like the Eco Warriors, my tattoo proves it, not the toys which were obnoxious but I loved the idea behind the team.)

Chuck loves the POC whirlwind kick SE so I bet he loves day-glow ninjas of yore. :)

Not a big fan of Ninja Force. Just for the record. I’ll give you the others, though. Don’t forget Air Commandos! Cloudburst, Skymate, SkyCreeper and Air Devil rock my ass. :D

Actually…our guest Kevin spoke at JoeCon concerning the DEF. I can see us fitting this into the show, yeah. - Gary

Greg: sorry. didnt mean to leave you out. i was already mad about something else when I was typing and I couldnt think straight. Please forgive me.

Justin: regardless of Skymate=’s neon bommerang I kinda like the Air Commandos as well. I kinda wihs I could find Sky Creeper at a decent price. I’ve been intrigued by the character since you used him in your dio stories and he had that unfortunate appearance in Devil’s Due

    Sep 27, 2011 at 3:46 pm

Ed, I will forgive. But I will never forget.

  • Jogunwarrior

Justin, Ninja Force had so much potential, but was squandered by the action attack gimmick. Star Brigade, DEF, Mega Marines, Sky Commando’s are awesome!

    Sep 27, 2011 at 5:26 pm
  • Justin

I agree, Jogun. I really loved the updated Scarlett and Snake Eyes designs but those spring-loaded hips ruined it. Slice, Dice, and Dojo were still workable, but they were about the only ones.

Even as a kid, I pulled some of them apart and filed down the tabs, which restricted their waist movement…

I want to apologize to the whole podcast crew.I do enjoy your show and I hope its continued success. I was inspired by this website:http://deliberatedumbingdown.com but I should have reserved comment. In regards to my crack about your sophmoric insults,I grow weary of this whole South Park/Family Guy borderline vulgarity that for some reason people today find hilariously funny. As a thrash metal New World Order Conspiracist, going against the grain is par the course for me I guess.BTW,Jaimanstone I don’t have a vaginal orfice, so why the douchebag crack? That’s exactly the humor/vulgarity I’m talking about…..

    Sep 27, 2011 at 9:11 pm
  • whatsonjoemind

Right on Jeremy. I can accept you apology.

  • Erick

Jeremy - I know you love to whine on the internet about….well, just about anything…in hopes of stirring the pot and being a troll (which you’re damn good at, mind you).

Question though: Do you buy G.I.Joes? Or do you just like to stalk collector websites in hopes that your trolling will piss someone off enough to make up for the fact that mommy never hugged you and daddy left you for “uncle bill”? Just curious.

Let’s all give Jeremy a big group hug. Then have him work through his anger issues by applying stickers on a 30th anniversary SkyStriker. I’m sure he’ll have let out all his anger by the time he reaches the last of those (censored0 “No Step” stickers

    Sep 28, 2011 at 10:17 am
  • jeremy

Erick, I have no idea who you are.I think you’ve got me confused with someone else. My screenname is “troublemagnet” on hisstank. My numerous postings and my customs are there for all to see.I’ve all ready apologized for my postings-why are you personally offended? Talk about beating a dead horse-what do you want from me blood? I assure you sir, all future postings will be strictly Joe-related. To paraphrase the great Dave Mustaine-”What do you mean I don’t buy G.I.Joes/ Why do you think I’m broke?” ‘Nuff Said. P.S.I don’t have an “Uncle Bill’ I’m misanthropic because of people like you.

    Sep 28, 2011 at 12:54 pm
  • Jeremy

Eduardo-funny you say that -I bought the Skystriker over a month ago and still haven’t opened the box for that very reason. The VAMP 2 stickers drove me absolutely nuts-I cringe what the stickers on the SkyStriker will do to me.

I had a small Chinese child apply mine. I thought he said he would do it for free, but I am not sure I understood him correctly because of his Chinese Public Education (they don’t teach English) and my American Public Education (they didn’t teach Chinese in my HS). I found him locked in Kevin’s basement.

(OK, OK, I kid…not busting anyone’s chops. Just having fun and don’t want to take this too far. :) ) -Gary

    Sep 28, 2011 at 2:10 pm
  • Eduardo M.

Jeremy- After the experience of putting stickeers on the Skystriker and Vamp, I have developed a deep hatred of stickers that have the word “step” on them.

Finally got a Black Dragon VTOL yesterday. Great design, very imposing looking thing, may get a second it’s so cool. But the best thing about is NO DECALS TO APPLY! I *hate* stickers for vehicles so I’m hoping future vehicle releases have those details painted on like the Dragon does.

You found Tsingtao!!? I have been looking everywhere for him! I dropped a nickel into a running lawnmower and need his tiny, Chinese hands to retrieve it while the mower’s running.

    Sep 28, 2011 at 4:24 pm
  • Jim

Kevin, he can’t retrieve nickels for you from running lawnmowers anymore. At least not since the last time you had him do it. Now he has to sell prototypes on the corner to buy rice for himself and his 5 year old sister who smuggles the prototypes out of the factory she makes them in. Sorry if I made any spelling or grammar mistakes, I’m the product of an American public school…

    Sep 28, 2011 at 5:02 pm
  • Eddie

No Jeremy, WOJM may forgive you, but I’m not done you. I didn’t like your comment about people who went to public school. Apparently you either went to private school or your a foreigner. Either way, ill wager that you hate America. See, public school guys join the military and get very good at killing terrorists so that psuedo intelectual starbuck drinking “rebels” like you are safe and free to say stupid things.

I went to public school, tried private school but left when a kid bit me in the arm. Yeah, they were all geniuses. Judging by your idiotic comments I’ll wager that your a genius as well.

There’s evil and then there’s EVIL. You just made the jump “TOTALLY UNQUESTIONABLY FREAKY EVIL. You’ve become the type of evil guy mooks don’t want to work for because they’re afraid you’ll kill out them of Sunday morning boredom

    Sep 28, 2011 at 6:18 pm
  • Jeremy

Eddie,First of all I’m American, went to public school my whole life including community college. Second,I’m an Army veteran, honorably discharged Desert Storm veteran.I was a 19K which was an armor crewman,in other words,I drove an MIAI Abrams tank in the First Cavalry division,Fort Hood, Texas. I also served 10 years in the NY Army National Guard as a combat engineer.I tell you this not to toot my own horn, but to show you how wrong you are. G.I.Joe exspecially the Larry Hama comic greatly influenced my reason to enlist in the first place. My favorite joes were Steeler and Short-Fuze, hence my desire to be a tanker. If any thing I’m a conspiracy theorist NWO big time, and I won’t take back what I said about the American Public Education system, see my previous entries for the link, maybe if you took the time to actually peruse said link, you would better be able to understand my position, rather than react emotionaly. Don’t even get me started about fighting terrorists-AlQuida is about real as Cobra. I don’t hate America-I love this country but most of its citizens fail to think critically and that’s what I’m disturbed about. Now that I’ve bored every one here, I think I’ll take my leave.

Don’t leave yet, Jeremy! If you hate sophomoric and juvenile behavior, and Chuck bashing, you are really gonna hate the next podcast.

Ed, I have to admit, Sunday mornings ARE pretty boring. I like your murder suggestion, I may look into that. “Sunday Morning Murder” almost sounds like a Thrash metal song!!!

@JD- I agree with ya. I’ve been trying to build my python patrol figure base up and want that crock master without having to custom one.

@cuhck- if I could vote in the states I would vote ya in for prez lol

@Jogunwarrior- ( reguards to ninja force comment made) I agree. Ninja force had huge potential. Scarlett was amazing and it gave Zartan a look like he did belong with the rest of the Dreadknocks. but the damn gimmick just snafooed it
