Episode 23: What’s on JOE Mind? Episode 25: What’s on JOE Mind? - Flag Points Crossover Edition!
Oct 05

For the second time in less than a week the team gathers for a show you won't want to miss.  First we have Ace Allgood from the Trenches 12" forum join us again to talk about the GIJCC's 12" incentive figure [echo]THE MAN OF EVIL[/echo] and the new 30th Anniversary 12" Joes we are seeing at retail.  He gives us his review plus everyone gives Gary grief for not opening his 12" Paratrooper.  Speaking of getting grief, the team dishes it out on Chuck, who, for some odd principal reasoning, won't join the GIJCC - shame on you Chuck!  From the mailbag we talk about the over abundance of Skystrikers that seem to be choking the shelves.  Is this a good sign?  Bad sign?  Or just too early to tell?  In the news we break the news to the community about a BIG change in the GIJCC subscription program, an addition to the availability of Footloose and send out the word that we should be hearing "any day" about the site of the 2012 con.  Also, Sideshow and Shout!Factory have some new offerings and we begin to get word of the first confirmed guests of the Roll Out/Roll Call 3 UK Transformer - Joe - Action Force Convention.  Its an early week release, but there is still plenty of talk and laughs to go around.  Stay for episode 24, but come back for #25 - its gonna be big!

As a little tiny bonus, I had a couple of friends ask to hear our promo. Since not everyone listens to our network partner podcasts, I thought I would include it here.

    Hi guys,

Again great show. Very informative as always and entertaining.I’m still very jealous of you guys in the states. In Winnipeg so far I have not been able to find any new joe product. No 30th figures, 12 inch, Vehicles. Nothing. And I work at wal-mart so if they are coming and I hope to god they are then its off their plan like the recent Reel Steel figures.

I have started my sky striker unit. I have 4 already ( 1 star scream and 3 regular) The goal is about 13 and six I want to custom in to an all Canadian unit. But still have to get them from online sources so building up slowly but will keep you guys posted..

@ chuck - when it comes to the pronouncing or DIC I too say D I C ( I have made the Froidian slip of __ick instead of “deek” ) but at the end of the DIC cartoons it was a high pitched “deek”

I am ecstatic that the club is making progress with the sub-service. I am actually though that Quarrel is not going to be first but hay she is coming all that counts. Can’t wait to enlist.

Anyway, have a good trip Gary and we’ll see you guys next week.:)

Oh yea I forgot, love the new promo with the entire crew. AWSOME

I think the Sky Striker issue could be that the SDCC exclusive was so desired that fans may have bought that and skipped the regular release. I know myself as well, my Joe enthusiam is probably at an all time low. I hate to sound like “one of those guys” but the POC figures do little to nothing for me. Some of them look REALLY COOL, but not enough for me to shell out $9 for them. When the 25th line was pumping, I would have bought the Striker… Now? I don’t really want it as much.

I know that GI Joe used to be geared so that the little figures they made almost no money on and the whole goal was to get you to buy vehicles for them. I would imagine that’s not the case anymore, because there are so few vehicles out there. Joe still makes a vehicle push, but it’s far less, which makes me think that while they can make money on them, they don’t make as much as they used to.

And I think you guys are wrong. The market is saturated. Not necessarily with Joe, but Joe is no longer king. So Joe is fighting for dollars with Star Wars, Marvel Universe, etc. And the price on the 3 3/4 figures has went up so much, it may come down to chosing a new version of Snake Eyes or the first small scale version of a Marvel character. Which will win out? This especially comes into play when a lot of the Joe characters a newly developed ones, like a new Viper style we haven’t seen before, etc.

I love the Man of Evil. Everything about him. Although, I don’t really want too many connections. No need for Destro to be the Man of Evil.

Speaking of the 12″ stuff… Throw your Sideshow down the stairs. Then throw your Joe down the stairs. See which one survives.

Also, I wanna live in Ace’s neighborhood. He sounds like the coolest neighbor ever, giving out toys to kids in the neighborhood. Awesome Joe.

I would have thought the WOJM promo would have had some type of discernable G.i.joe music; what was the backround music from ?

Sorry about some of my last post. did the comments while up all hours and made spelling errors.

I ment to say I was looking forward to quarrel being one of the first if not the first to come out. but oh well.

As for connecting the Adventure team with the 3/34 line. I love it didn’t any one see the great connection with the baroness and man of action in last month’s club news letter? Awesome story. And the dossier for the “Adventurer” is basically Doc is it not?Its still great to see the connection. Catch you guys next friday

    @Tolan - shame on you Tolan…and you call yourself a Joe fan…ppfftt! :D

Its the music you hear in the background in the movie when the team is taking Duke and Ripcord to the Pit. I can post the artist credits later. But it most certainly Joe related! :)

Saw both waves of 30th figures at 2 different walmarts, only 4 pegs at each store. One store had all of the renegades and the 3 cobra toopers, while the other was only missing Stalker and Steel Brigade. The 2nd Walmart also had the Black Dragon and VAMP II. So it looks like the Hasbro folks are finally coming through.

I want to live in this strange world where the market is saturated. I collect STAR WARS, G.I. JOE, and Marvel Universe, and I certainly haven’t had to choose between one character or another. I’ve spent most of the year waiting for new figures to be released, and I’m not just buying at the lowest possible Walmart price. I’m paying to have them delivered from BBTS or someone on eBay.

    #25 sounds cool. can’t wait.

On another note, where did you get the music that plays when you do the contact info? Everytime I hear it, I feel like I’m on a game show and the host is telling me what I’ll win if I make through the lighning round

    Hi guys,

Just top give an update on the figure situation in Winnipeg : walmart still has 0 at this point but TRU has 4 or 5 pegs of mainly POC wave 3 at present with a few Beachhead’s but seeing these out at least gives me some hope we will be seeing 30th anniversary soon. Still no vehicles as yet though.

I hope like hell Footloose isn’t a repeat of Dial-Tone. I never got my club Dial-Tone and ended up buying a Mission Brazil version on eBay. Really hesitant to renew with the club after that. 42 bucks seems a bit high for just a newsletter.

Also, I’m all for the con being in Nashville.

Hi, I have been listening to your podcast and it is totally a lot of fun. Great shows guys!

I found an very interesting article online and would love to share it with you all. This article talks about the history of action figures, molding process, sculpturing, and quality control of the toy products. It would be an interesting idea to do a show talking about this whole process for us listener. There are a lot great facts in the article to make it even very educational too.

    Here is the link: http://www.answers.com/topic/action-figure

Thanks producing such a fantastic show.

    Cheers, Peter

I’m not kissing anybody’s ass when I say this podcast gets better with every new episode. Its a simple truth.

Ace is a great interview, I’m looking forward to more with him on future episodes. It was awesome hear he got a second set of Club’s AT figures to open up. I wish there were more 3 3/4″ AT figures in the Club’s plans. :(

Great news about Nano BAT and Quarrel not being the first sub figures sent out. I dig the nanodroid for reasons I can’t explain but it is a niche figure that isn’t thrilling. The other planned figures need to be more interesting to hook a good number of people. I’m hoping for Blackout and Dr X to be some of the offerings.

Memphis or Nashville would entice me to consider going to a Con again if I can arrange it… Location is a big factor, New Orleans finally got me to go to one… One of the big Tennessee cities would absolutely be compelling enough for me.

Great episode, I am REALLY looking forward to episode 25!!!

What could also be affecting Skystriker sales is that the F-14 Tomcat it’s based on was retired in 2006. It’s iconic for us oldschool fans but for kids today it must be like us seeing a Spitfire on the shelves in ‘83. It’s just out of date. GI Joe as always been on the cutting edge or slightly in the future, Hasbro might have more success with something the kids can relate to, like the F-35 Lightning.

Thanks as always for all of the feedback, everyone!

Newt - You have some good points about the Skystriker and Sideshow Collectibles both. I agree, the Sideshow figures are not nearly as durable as the Hasbro stuff. Sideshow doesn’t have to play along with all of the same safety standards as Hasbro does, which gives them the ability to turn up the notch on removable items and small clasps or buckles. Better detail, but worse playability.

Ryan - Nice catches on the Adventure Team/RAH tie in. Definitely right on the money with the Baroness, we should have mentioned that. Hadn’t see the Doc tidbit yet! Is that from the most recent newsletter, or did I stupidly miss something from last month?

    JD - I hope you’ve listened by now! :P

Kord - I had amazing luck myself at Target this week. Found about 7 different troop builders (and left 4 Steel Brigades on the pegs) and saw plenty of VAMPs and Black Dragons in most Walmarts I stopped in. Was very happy.

johnny rook - If you didn’t get Dial Tone (even though you subbed before the deadline) I’m sure that was an abhoration. Don’t expect that to happen again, or better yet, you might already be subbed next year and will already receive Footloose.

Peter - GREAT article. Thanks for pointing that out!

    Hey Guys

Yeah Im with Leroy. Being in Australia means its harder to find joes as its not at retail here. I had to get my skystriker from ebay and it feels as if they stole from me!

Great job tho guys. Keep it up.

    @Justin

It might be that I’m seeing more from the drawing and reading a bit of the back story of the Adventurer then anything. ( Page 11 of the September newsletter) The background states he is a field medic and the way its drawn with the tan uniform minus the helmet and glasses just reminds me of Doc though both characters might be totally different. I got the same feel with the arctic Adventurer being close in design to Snow Job ( pg 10 June issue) I mean with out the Team logo one could easily say yah that’s a drawing of Snowjob. I just love the whole newsletter. I wish I joined the club years ago this is actually my first year. And with Footloose , the subscription, and the great newsletter. I will be a long time patron.

Ace is a great guest, his enthusiasm is so infectious! I’m interested to find out the location of the next Joecon, I’ve never been to one and am hoping to make it to my first next year! Somewhere in the Midwest would be ideal for convenience sake. If I had to guess a spot, I’d say Indianapolis.

@Ryan for all those years I just thought it was some juvenile mumbling, but Greg being Greg just had to prove me wrong and when I heard it again I heard Deek.

@Leroy and TJ Bang, our comments on somebody in Australia not paying for their Skystrikers was a shot at a certain former guest host who went from having 0 Skystrikers to 4. I hate him. But I like you guys.

    Oct 10, 2011 at 2:46 am
  • Justin

Ha! Awesome to hear from more fans from Australia. So there are more than 4 Skystrikers over there. Sweet! :)

JD, thanks very much for the nice words. That type of feedback means a lot, we’re glad the show is finding a good following.

Ryan, I love your ideas about the Adventure Team. I will admit when I see the bio’s in the newsletter, I kind of skim over them, but I will certainly be paying much closer attention from here on out.

Troops - I agree about the Skystriker. Personally I would have much rather seen a newer plane painted up like the Skystriker as an homage, rather than a straight reproduction of the classic, but I think a lot of fans loved the fact that it was so faithfully translated.

Again, so happy with the positive buzz the show is getting. Thanks, all!

Y’all are recording the podcast tomorrow {Wed} right? Let’s hear some speculation from everyone on what the BBTS exclusive 7packs will contain before we find out this weekend from NYCC what they’ll contain.

Also who are the panelists’ favorite Joes and favorite Cobras? Say top 3 of each maybe.

    Oct 11, 2011 at 9:39 pm
  • whatsonjoemind

Yeah, I’m back from my trip and we are still on for a Wednesday recording. We MAY do a Special Edition for NYCC. We’re still looking at the possibility.

Wow, talk about an old skool question. Another new Joe theme titled, yet multigenre topic podcast just started up and this was their FIRST question they talked about. All I was thinking, “wow, sounds like something I would read on the forums!” But, every podcast needs to start somewhere. Just think, the Joe podcast landscape was barren, now you have WOJM, Flag Points, GI Joe Review and about 4 others.

Anyway, I don’t know if we will have time for your Joe/Cobra question this week, so I will go ahead and answer it.

Joe for me is pretty well known by me mentioning it on the show: Snow Job, Torpedo and maybe lesser known is Kwinn.

The first Cobra should not be a surprise from my comments on the show, but #3 may catch you off guard: Dr. Venom, Destro, and Cobra De Aco.

I’m going to go back today relisten to the first few episodes of WOJM, it’s been a good since I heard them. :) ahhh.. nostalgia

Hoping the Club will have some of the subsciption figures at NYCC to reveal finally, it’d be nice if 6 or so of the 13 will be there. It sucks ass that Justin can’t be in NY this weekend but hey neither can I so I’ll be checking out his blog for his remote coverage of the show.

  • JD

Relistened to the pilot and now I’m just finishing episode one. I forgot how short the first eps were, I’m happy the the podcasts have gotten longer with time. I’m still hoping for a 4-hour-long show at some point.

JOEVERSE. Wait, who said Joeverse? Not me. :P

  • Jogunwarrior

I always loved the term Joeverse, and admittedly use it often.

Is there any chance of getting someone on the line to talk about the Iowa Joe Collector’s Meet-Up on November 13th? Its mentioned here: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-conventions-get-togethers/160364-iowa-g-i-joe-collectors-meet-up.html
